Impala males will contest eachothers strength in order to gain favour with females-sometimes a single impala ram can be seen surrounded by a group of females. The contest for dominance is characterised by a charge, followed by the clashing of horns with neither animal giving ground until the other tires and retreats. Very occasionally, this can lead to death for the combatants when the horns become locked together and the poor souls are unable to extricate themselves.
